Bungee Jump
Nepal’s first bungee jumping site is situated 160m over the wild Bhote Kosi river, and located close to the Nepal-Tibet border, a three-hour bus ride from Kathmandu. The jump was designed by one of New Zealand’s leading bungee consultants and is operated by some of the most experienced jump masters in the business. As always with this sport, safety is paramount.
Location
You will travel the Arniko (Kathmandu/Lhasa) Highway to within 12km of the Tibet Border and the famous Friendship Bridge.
The Bridge
Swiss designed specially for bungee jumping with a 4x safety factor. More than 6000 metres of steel wire was used to build the bridge and it is the longest suspension bridge in Nepal. It also joins two sides of a great valley, and prior to its construction locals walked five hours to cross the gorge
Paragliding
Paragliding in Nepal offers a wonderful aerial view of the Himalayas. Pokhara, the beautiful lakeside town at the foot of the Annapurna Mountains, offers paragliding to see the Mahabharat range. As with other flying sports, gliding season is November through February, the paragliding is suitable for veterans and novices.
A three-day introductory course is offered to beginners while tandem flights where one can fly with instructor are offered as an alternative.
Another option is to include introductory flights before taking off on a six-day para-trek. While on the Para trek, the flyers camp in villages with local Sherpa guides. The take-off point for these is Sarankot, near Pokhara. The bus trip form Kathmandu to Pokhara can take up to eight hours or as few as six. Daily flights operate between Kathmandu and Pokhara and take around 40 minutes.
Mountain Flights
For the traveller who is unable to trek to the mountains either because of lack of time or physical fitness, mountain flights are a brilliant way to experience the Himalayas.
The one hour flight takes you within camera range of some of the highest peaks in the world and cruising this close to the awe-inspiring massifs of rock and ice is an incredible experience. The aircraft takes off and heads eastward and almost immediately, the peaks come into view. The first peak that appears in your horizon is the majestic Gosaithan, standing 8,013m tall. To its right, appears Dorje Lakpa (6,966m), looking like a massive figure of eight lying prone and covered in snow. To its right is Phurbi Chyachu, which looms large over the Kathmandu Valley.
Next on your vision is Choba Bhamare, rather small in this company at 5,933m, but singularly stubborn as it remains unconquered to this day. Then comes Mt. Gaurishanker (7,134m), standing out sharp and conspicuous-Hindus believe that lord Shiva and his consort Parvati protect this mountain.
As the flight moves towards the eastern Himalaya, a succession of majestic mountains follows. Melungtse, with a plateau-like top stands at 7,023m, Chugimago is at 6,297m, and remains unclimbed. At 6,956m, Mt. Numbur is believed to be the maternal source in the sky providing pure milk to the Sherpas of Solukhumbu. Then, Karyolung, a dazzling-white mountain at 6,511m, and Cho-Oyu, the sixth highest in the world at 8,021m.
The last and most exciting stretch of the journey takes you close to the 7,952m tall Gyachungkang, which is considered an extremely tough climb. To its right is Pumori at 7,161m and Nuptse at 7,855m. Finally, there is Mount Everest itself (8,848m), called Sagarmatha by the Nepali’s and Chomolungma by Tibetan’s. It is an altogether different feeling as one comes face to face with the world’s tallest and most revered mountain.
Mountain Biking
Nepal’s diverse terrain is what mountain bikers dream about and it is possible to bike the entire length of Nepal. Centuries-old dirt roads and trails offer a chance to go on extended trip to exotic locales like Annapurna and through rough terrain. Mountain bikes are available for rent for any duration and there are a number of bicycle rental outlets in and around Kathmandu or Pokhara. Riders can explore the rims and ridges of Kathmandu and Pokhara on routes that weave in and out of each city. Food and accommodation are easily to find around the Valley and along the trail. However, it is recommended to use the service of licensed biking companies, which we can happily recommend.
