Pilgrimage Treks & Tours

Nepal is a country where each temple, stupa, gumba and idol has it’s own legend about the supernatural power of it’s deities. People’s belief in these deities has resulted in Nepal being one of the most famous pilgrimage destinations for both Hindus and Buddhists. Pashupatinath, Swayambhunath, Boudhanath, Gosaikunda, Muktinath, Lumbini and Namo Buddha are some of the major religious sites in Nepal.

Situated at a height of 3660m, Muktinath is a pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists. The two storied structure of Muktinath shows the co-existence of the Buddhist and Hindu culture; the lower storey being a Gompa and the upper storey, a temple. Gosikunda is believed to be the abode of the Hindu god ‘Shiva’. According to Hindu mythology, the holy lakes of Gosaikuda was created by Lord Shiva’s Trishul (three pointed weapon) so that he could drink it’s cold water and quench his thirst.

Lumbini is the holy site where Buddha was born. In the ruins of ancient Lumbini, we find a sacred tree, the Ashoka pillar, a bathing pond and the Mayadevi temple, where the exact spot of Buddha’s birth is located. As of 1997, Lumbini is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Boudhanath stupa is one of the holiest and largest Stupas in the world. In 1979 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Over 50 Gompas surround this Stupa located in the Eastern part of Kathmandu.

Swayambhunath is probably the most sacred site for pilgrimage in Buddhism. It is also known as the Monkey Temple because a number of holy monkeys live in and around the temple premises. The Stupa sits atop a small hill in Kathmandu and is surrounded by small shrines and temples. Namo Buddha is believed to be the place where Lord Buddha had once offered his life to a starving Tigress and her cubs. Namo Buddha which is located 40 kilometers from Kathmandu is also one of the most famous Buddhist pilgrimage in Kathmandu.
