| Day 1 | Arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport & Transfer to Hotel. Namaste and welcome to Nepal, You’ll be met and assisted at the airport by our local representatives who will arrange your transfer and check in to your hotel. your hotel. |
| Day 2 | Early morning flight to Lukla (2,800m) and Trek to Phakding. And O/N Phakding. (2,652m) We usually rise around 4am to ensure we get the flight to Lukla (2827m). The flight itself is awe-inspiring as we fly parallel to the Himalayan giants bordering Nepal and Tibetan China. Flight time is about 40 minutes to the airstrip built by Sir Edmund Hillary and the Sherpas in the mid – 1960s. After landing we will have time to explore the village. And after a hearty second breakfast, we begin the trek by descending towards the Dudh Koshi River, where we join the main trail to Namche Bazaar, just above Chaunrikharka (2,713m). The walking is easy and after passing through the small village of Ghat (2550m), it is a short walk to Phakding. |
| Day 3 | Phakding to Namche Bazaar. O/N Namche Bazaar. (3,446m) Today is one of the toughest days. The trail crosses several suspension bridges over the Dudh Koshi River before arriving at the entrance gate to Sagarmatha National Park. After crossing three more bridges the trail makes a steep climb through alpine and rhododendron forests where we should see local deer, birds and other wildlife as we follow the trail for around 4 hours to reach Namche Bazaar. The highest Sherpa market in the world. |
| Day 4 | Rest day in Namche Bazaar. O/N Namche Bazaar (3,446m) We remain at Namche for a second night to allow for proper acclimatization to the altitude. Namche is a prosperous village situated in a large, protected hollow. It gained its importance during the period when Tibetan salt was traded for the lowland grains of Nepal. Today a limited amount of trade exists at Namche and Tibetans are often seen in the village trading rugs and Chinese-made goods, clothing, salt and dried meat. It is recommended that you take the opportunity to see both the sunrise and sunset views from the national park above the village. After breakfast a number of options exist: trek towards Thame (3,810m) along the beautiful Bhote Khola River valley, or visit the National Park Headquarters to see the interesting displays of Sherpa lifestyle and culture, mountaineering in the park, and flora and fauna. |
| Day 5 | Namche Bazaar to Dole. O/N Dole. (4,084m) The trail leads down through rhododendron scrub forest towards an impregnable looking rock wall on the north side of the valley. A ‘giant’s causeway’ of granite steps forms an incredible route up this face before the trail emerges on high grazing ground. One hour further down the trail are wonderful views across the valley to Ama Dablam, rising above the rooftops of Tengboche. The trail then descends steeply towards the Dudh Kosi, leaving the main route through to Pangboche, and instead turns north towards Gokyo. There is a good lunch spot beneath a canopy of birch and rhododendron just after the turn off. A stiff but attractive climb leads to Dole, which lies just above the tree-line. |
| Day 6 | Dole to Machhermo. O/N Machhermo. (4,465m) From Dole the trail climbs via Lhabarma at 4,220m to Luza at 4360m. The path is steep in most places as it climbs through scrub to Lhabarma. The track continues to climb along the side of the valley high above the river, crossing sandy spurs to reach Machermao at 4465m It was in Machermao in 1974 that one of the first Yeti sightings was reported in the Khumbu. There are good mountain views from Machhermo and we rest here for the night. |
| Day 7 | Machhermo to Gokyo. O/N Gokyo. (4,791m) Beyond Machhermo, the trail climbs over a ridge for an amazing view. You can see the valley to Kantega if you look downwards and if you look upwards, you will see Cho Oyu (8,153m). Beyond the ridge the valley widens as the trail passes through Pangram at 4,390m. We descend towards the river bank before beginning the steep climb up to the terminal moraine of the Ngozumpa glacier. Afterwards, the trail levels out as it follows the valley past a second lake, known as Longponga at 4,690m. Then finally up a boulder-strewn path to reach Gokyo at 4,750m. |
| Day 8 | Rest day in Gokyo (4,791m). It is well worth the effort to make the 3-hour ascent to the summit of Gokyo Ri, a small hill which rises immediately to the north of the lake. The view from the top is stunning, with the west ridge and south-west face of Everest beautifully framed by Changtse and Nuptse, Makalu raising further to the east, and in the foreground to the north the chaotic moraines of the Ngozumpa Glacier leading to the snowy bastion of Cho Oyu. |
| Day 9 | Trek to Thangna (4,650m) This morning hike up to Gokyo Ri for the breathtaking sunrise and views of the mountains including Everest and many more. Afterwards we stroll back an hour to Gokyo for breakfast then trek down to Thangnak through the second lake and walk on the glacier. |
| Day 10 | Trek to Chola pass (5,368m) and cover night Jongla Today we walk the high passes. This is one of the tough days as we cross the Cho-la at 5,368 metres. The pass is not technically difficult but it is steep and involves a glacier traverse on the eastern side. After crossing the pass and reaching Dzongla we stop overnight at the teahouse. It has a very basic dorm room with cosy dining. Enjoy the fantastic views all around. |
| Day 11 | Trek to Lobuche (4,930m). This is an easy and short walk to be in Lobuche by early afternoon. From here there are panoramic views of Kala Patthar and Pumori as well as Everest. |
| Day 12 | Trek Lobuche - Gorak Shep (5,165m) Optional Kala Pathar 2 hours (5,545m) About 3 hours beyond Lobuche, we reach Gorak Shep, the site of the 1953 expedition’s base camp and the 2009 Everest Cricket Match. An evening ascent of Kala Pathar (5,545m) is highly recommended for a sunset view of Everest. A sunrise view is equally impressive. The climb takes about 2 hours and can be hard work, but the effort is rewarded by the classic view of Everest and the Khumbu Ice fall, as well as Lhotse, Nuptse, and Pumori immediately above. |
| Day 13 | Trek to Kala Pathar and overnight stay Gorak Shep (5,165m) Another chance to take in either Kala Pathar or Everest Base Camp itself, where if you are lucky you can interact with climbers hoping to summit the world’s highest peak. |
| Day 14 | Trek back to Feriche. (4,240m) We retrace our steps to Lobuche, and keep going down the Khumbu valley. Passing the snout of the Khumbu Glacier, we reach a line of memorials to Sherpas and famous guides such as Scott Fisher who have died on Everest. With the stunning peak of Ama Dablam in the background, we pass the small settlement of Dugla, and continue to Pheriche. This is a large village and a permanent base for the Himalayan Rescue Association. |
| Day 15 | Trek back to Tengboche (3,867m). Following the main Everest trail down the beautifully scenic valley, we pass through Pangboche and re-cross the river before climbing to the famous monastery at Tengboche. It now has a brand new monastery, the largest in the area, as the old one was destroyed by fire. Built in the traditional style, with its gleaming copper roofs, it is as grand as ever. |
| Day 16 | Trek back to Namche Bazaar (3,446m) A steep descent of around 500m leads through bird filled rhododendron bushes and fir trees to the Dudh Kosi River. Crossing this on yet another suspension bridge, we climb up the opposite side of the valley to reach the contouring path leading back to Namche Bazaar. Namche is the perfect place to enjoy some well-deserved celebrations! |
| Day 17 | Trek back to Lukla (2,800m) A steep descent for 600m leads to the suspension bridge crossing the Dudh Koshi River. We cross the river twice more before a rising traverse up the hill-side, past numerous tea-houses to Lukla. |
